Child's Striped Poncho

MATERIALS:

	Approx. 200g (8oz) Double Knitting (US light worsted) rainbow coloured acrylic yarn (M)
	Approx. 100g (4oz) Double Knitting (US light worsted) solid coloured acrylic yarn (C)
	4mm (US G/6) crochet hook

ABBREVIATIONS: (American notation)

	st - stitch	sc - Single Crochet
	sk - Skip	dc(s) - Double Crochet(s)
	ch - Chain	rep(s) - repeat(s)
	inc - increase	shell - 3dc, ch1
	sl st - Slip Stitch	loop - 4ch, 1sc

SIZE:

	One size to fit child approx. age 4 - 14 years old
	Neck circumference: approx. 22 inches
	Length: approx. 15 inches excluding fringe

INSTRUCTIONS:

Notes:
1)The pattern is created by working alternating rounds of loops and shells (see the abbreviations above for how to work these), with increases at 2 areas of each round. The increase areas form the front and back points of the poncho. As you work, the start/end of the round will appear to move around slowly; this is due to the increases being incorporated into the rounds. Simply work loops or shells as required to reach the start of the round.
2) The "#" and "*" characters are simply pattern instruction markers - as you will see later in the rounds it says "repeat from * xx times more" and "repeat from # x more".
3) Gauge doesn't really matter - this is a loose-fit pattern which is why it fits such a wide age range of children.

Foundation Round: Using M ch 112, sl st to 1st chain to form ring.
Round 1 (loops): Sc in next st, work [1 loop into 4th ch from hook] to end, sl st into 1st loop to join. (28 loops made)
Round 2 (shells): Ch3 (counts as 1st dc), 2dc into 1st 4ch space, ch1 (1st shell made), work [1shell into next loop] to end, sl st into top of 1st dc to join. (28 shells made)
Round 3 (loops): # work [1 loop into next ch1 space] 13 times (13 loops made), work 2 loops into next ch1 space (1 extra loop worked at front point), rep from # once more (1 extra loop worked at back point), sl st into 1st loop to join. (30 loops made)
Round 4 (shells): Ch3 (counts as 1st dc), 2dc into 1st loop, ch1 (1st shell made), work 1 shell into each of next 14 loops, work 2 shells into next loop (1 extra shell worked at front point), work 1 shell into each of next 14 loops, work 2 shells into next loop (1 extra shell worked at back point), sl st to top of 1st dc to join. (32 shells made)
Round 5 (loops): # work [1 loop into next ch1 space] 15 times (15 loops made), work 2 loops into next ch1 space (1 extra loop worked at front point), rep from # once more (1 extra loop worked at back point), sl st into 1st loop to join. (34 loops made)
Round 6 (shells): Ch3 (counts as 1st dc), 2dc into 1st loop, ch1 (1st shell made), work 1 shell into each of next 15 loops, work 2 shells into next loop (1 extra shell worked at front point), work 1 shell into each of next 15 loops, work 2 shells into next loop (1 extra shell worked at back point), sl st to top of 1st dc to join. (increased by 2 shells - 1 at front point & 1 at back point) (36 shells made)
Round 7 (loops): Work [1 loop into next ch1 space] until front point is reached, work 2 loops into ch1 space of front point (1 extra loop worked at front point), work [1 loop into next ch1 space] until back point is reached, work 2 loops into ch1 space of back point (1 extra loop worked at back point), work [1 loop into next ch1 space] until start of round is reached, sl st into 1st loop to join. (38 loops made)
Round 8 (shells): Ch3 (counts as 1st dc), 2dc into 1st loop, ch1 (1st shell made), work 1 shell into next loop until front point is reached, work 2 shells into loop of front point (1 extra shell worked at front point), work 1 shell into next loop until back point is reached, work 2 shells into loop of back point (1 extra shell worked at back point), work 1 shell into next loop until start of round is reached, sl st to top of 1st dc to join. (40 shells made)
Rep Rounds 7 & 8 to continue the increases as set (note the count of loops and shells will increase by 2 after each rep), using the following colour sequence (count from beginning):
3 reps (i.e. 6 rounds) of M
2 reps (i.e. 4 rounds) of C
Rep this colour sequence 4 times, then
Finish off with 3 reps of rounds 7 & 8 using M, followed by 1 rep of Round 7 using M.
Fasten off and sew in ends.

Note: To adjust the length of the poncho, simply worked more or less reps as above. If you work more reps, more yarn will be required than specified.

Fringe (optional):

Cut 4 lengths of M, each 5 inches long.
Hold together and fold in half to form a loop.
Thread loop from front to back through a 4ch space at the bottom edge of the poncho.
Pull the ends through the loop and pull tight.
Rep in every other 4ch space.
Rep using C in each remaining 4ch space.
