Date: Tue, 31 Mar 1998 10:31:17 -0800 From: Lu Kelce (kelulu@pacbell.net) EYELET SWIRL DOILY SIZE: Approximately 15 inches in diameter. Size may be increased by casting on more stitches or decreased by casting on less stitches. MATERIALS: 1 2 oz. skein Coats & Clark Luster Sheen 6 claw weights Size E/4 crochet hook Yarn Needle GAUGE: Not necessary Keyplate # 1 NOTE: When using KP#1, apply a little more pressure to the carriage. Check each row to correct any dropped stitches or stitches that do not knit. Hang hem weight and CO 30 st with waste yarn. 15 st each side of 0. Knit 8 to 10 rows. (Knit more rows than you would for a sweater as this work is more open and waste yarn may ravel out as work progresses.) Change to MY and K 2 rows *Leaving 4 needles on the far right hand side in WP, put the remaining 26 needles in HP. Knit 2 rows. NOTE: Start hanging claw weights and continue to hang them as soon as there is space to add a new one. About the time the first "Panel" is finished, the hem weight must be removed. DO NOT REMOVE WASTE YARN. Move claw weights up as you go. Push next needle on right hand side into FWP and knit 2 rows. Continue to push one needle into FWP in this manner and knit 2 rows until 3 stitches remain. Push next needle to FWP, knit 1 row (COL) and pass yarn under the next needle and over the last needle. Knit back to the right. DO NOT WORK LAST TWO STITCHES. LEAVE THEM IN HP. Knit 2 rows.* Repeat from *to* 4 more times. 5 "panels". Remove stitches from needles on waste yarn. Gather center stitches carefully with yarn needle and pull up snugly. Graft stitches on beginning and ending waste yarn together. NOTE: You may want to carefully steam press the doily at this point. Be sure to use the proper setting, possibly the lowest temperature that will give you steam on the iron. Press on a towel. Using E/4 crochet hook and working from the wrong (purl) side of doily, crochet one or two rows of single crochet around edge of doily taking stitches 1 complete stitch in from edge. If you like, you may put a scalloped pattern on the second row. This gives the edge more weight and helps the doily lay flat. By making a gauge swatch, you can use other types of yarn and adjust sizes of the circle. Happy Knitting, Lu in Riverside, Ca.
