From: "Ann Yotter" Subject: Flamingo hat Flamingo Hat by Ann Yotter Defenitions: KP3 - Keyplate #3, WY - Waste Yarn, K - Knit, tog - together, wgt - weight, This hat is worked in Caron Dazzle Aire, a worsted wgt acrylic that is slightly fuzzy, slightly sparkly in a soft grey with an ombre band around face. The ombre acrylic had no label. Used a full 3 oz skein of each, plus the yarn to duplicate st the design. If I do it again, I will do intarsia, now that I know where to place the design. The bird is a little high on the hat, but can't go lower, as he will start curling around to the underside as the hat narrows. You could make the hat a little longer before starting the decreases to move him down. (In the picture, Harmony doesn't have the front edge folded up so he is down where he can be seen better.) Use KP3, work 78 st for 70 rows on [to] WY. Rehang hem and K both layers tog on row 71. This gives a double wgt area 35 rows wide that we wear rolled up to give 4 layers over the ears. You could do ribbing in this area instead or make it shorter and not wear it rolled. Whatever. Row 72 - Dec one st at each end by moving the 2 end sts in one needle each. Continue to decrease every 4th row until you run out of yarn or sts. I worked about 4 more rows of ombre into the decreases until I ran out of it and changed to the grey background. Start working the chart 16 rows down from where you joined the hem on row 71 (row 87). You will be starting at the top of the head. Chart is centered with 12 sts to left of 0 (head side) and 11 sts to right of 0 (tail side). I'm going to give the chart reading L to R row by row. I don't know which side the carriage is on in the chart, as I didn't knit the design. Those skinny little legs might be easier to duplicate st. Sew up seam of hat and add a tassel or pompom to tail. Made a French knot eye in black. Flamingo Chart. 23st wide x 53 rows Colors: D - dark pink, P - light pink, G - background, W - white, B - black, L - leg color (yellow or pink) (I didn't like yellow with the rest of the hat, so I used a shiny, boucle light pink that let a lot of the grey show and gave a slightly scaley look to the legs. Just a fluke I had the stuff. My choice of black was voted down as unauthentic by the resident flamingo expert.)
