Bearing in mind the pattern format that was given previously for a pumpkin sweater, use the forest green for the ribbing, take the sweater up in deep red, and latch tool every 6 or 8 stitches for definition. Hat - cast on in red and knit allowing the ribbing to roll, for the top leaves do as in the pumpkin but use a deeper green, make the stem the same as in the pumpkin. Mittens - in red with green and brown stripes, Scarf - knit in red with green and brown fringe. For a raspberry sweater cast on in dark green, and then change and using your swatch as a guide change to either deep purple/red, or black/red and knit up in the honeycomb style, if not mistaken, there is a pattern in the first Bond & Beyond Afghans and Throw books for a baby afghan using the stitch over 4- 5 rows, have tried this on a hat and it is adorable. For the hat, use your guage to form the multiple of stitches and using green knit at least the ten rows for the rolled brim in green, then take it up in colour of your berry choice, this could also be grapes if desired, then end at the top without leaves or a stem. For the mittens, do the bands in green and the mittens in the same stitch, Scarf the same as desired. Socks can be knit in the same way remembering to stop the pattern above the ankle as it will only wear down and confuse you after the heel shaping, but you can maintain it on the top of the foot, hopefully this one will be charted before I return home. In looking at a pattern for a strawberry sweater, though this one as well could be converted to a cute hat pattern, I would knit it with the green base as before rolled brim, then change to a fluffy red worsted weight yarn and then work in a stitch of yellow worsted weight as if you were knitting in dots, or as Cheryl Brunnette refers to them as little birds or little lice. Take it to the top as before, and end with a set of leaaves about three around the top and a green stem, this would be adorbale. And to think I can hardly wait to knit these for the shelter. Fruit or Flower Cap Infant up to toddler age 5 1 3 ounce skein worsted weight yarn in green 1 3 ounce worsted weight yarn in rose( or orange or red or purple or yellow....etc....) Basic cap: CO 70 needles with WY K 6 R......Break off WY and K 47 R with MY being sure to leave a two foot length hanging down.....BO using back stitch.....Remove work from machine and before removing hem thread your long tail threw the first row of stitch where they meet the WY.....Break off hem and set aside Leaves: CO 3 needles with closed edge CO...Use claw weights to weight knitting....K 2 R...Increase 1 stitch on carraige side every row 10x.....K 1 row Straight....Decrease 1 stitch carraige side every row 10x...You should have three stiches left....BO using back stitch....Make three leaves Stem: CO 10 needles with WY K 3 R...Break off WY....With MY K 10 R...Bring first row of MY up to needles...Knit 1 R and BO using back stitch....Remove WY Finish: Pull the long tail that you threaded threw the first row of stitches to gather....Use this tail to sew side seam....Remove WY...Let the bottom edge roll the way it wants to.....Sew down leaves around the gathers in the top covering the hole and hiding the loose thread ends under the leaves.......Sew down stem twisting and curling it as you go to make it resemble a vine...You now have what resemble a flower hat.... Do yellow for a lemon....Red with black spots put ont by hand for a strawberry....Purple for a eggplant...Etc... Do orange for a pumpkin....K 6 R straight then release every 5th stitch onto WY and K 47 R.....Rib up each 5th stitch....From the front this should give you indentations like on a real pumpkin..... You could do a scarf to match just make some extra leaves and Co 55 sts K 120 R BO sew leaves down around short edges of scarf...Single crochet the long sides..... Enjoy P.S. My Daughter is going to be a gaint Pea Pod for Halloween....I think I'll make the hat in all green to go with her costume....Gina TTFN ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Sep 1997 21:18:28 -0700 From: bahrens@pacbell.net Subject: [BOND] Fruit/Flower Cap Hi GUys, More ideas for the Cap Pattern I already posted...You could do the basic cap with bobbles all over then add the leaves and stem for a grape or Raspberry...You could, for the strawberry, do tucks all over and the add a bit of black inside each tuck stitch...Then add the leaves and stem...This Pattern would be great to try some of those fancy stitches that you want to do before you start a whole sweater or larger project...Gina..TTFN
