Subject: [BOND] Simple Long Coat with Hood.- Adaptions for shawl collar and fairisle
This pattern could be adapted to a shawl collar pattern with an open
front going to a "v" by using the basic wool cardigan pattern that is on
Stephanies site and is also pictured on the Bond Gallery.
Here goes my version of the hooded long Jacket. I plan on putting
intarsia around the top of the hood as well as down the front and along the
bottom to give it some dimension.
Materials:- 100 grams of pure wool worsted weight - Briggs & Little or Wool
Ease
Keyplate # 3 for main garment and # 2 for ribbing if you decide
to rib rather than add intarsia or fairisle on the bottom.
Tension:- 20 stitches and 28 rows to 4 inches on keyplate 3.
Finished Size - 46.5 inch chest
34 inch body length with a 3 inch ribbing or
fairisle band
12 inch hood with a 3 inch fairisle band included.
19 inch sleeve with a 3 inch band of fairisle
or ribbing.
Back:-
Using waste yarn cast on 118 stitches. knit 6 rows. change to main
colour and either knit the fairisle or continue knitting for 142 rows.
Cast off 5 stitches at beginning of next two rows - COR.
Decrease one stictch at armhole end every 3rd row 4 times then
decrease one stitch at armhole edge every 2nd row 32 times.== for a total of
220 with 36 stitches left on machine for back of neck. Take off onto waste
yarn.
Front:-
Right side worked first:-
Cast on 60 stitches in waste yarn and knit 6 rows, change to main
colour and knit 142 rowsin total. COR.
Armhole - decrease for armhole at the right end as for back and
continue until 196 rows in total have been knit with 31 stitches remaining.
Shape neckline as follows.
COR cast off 10 stitches onto waste yarn, continue armhole
shaping, at the same time decrease one stitch at neck edge ( left side )
every row 7 times until 10 stitches remain. Knit 17 rows even at neckline,
continuing to shape at armhole. Total of 220 rows. Cast off remaining 2
stitches.
Left side worked as right except reverse shapings.
Sleeves:-
Cast on 54 stitches with waste yarn and knit for 6 rows ending with
COR. Knit 14 rows even. COR. Increase one stitch at each end of the next
row and every following 5th row a total of 18 times or 92 stitches. Row
counter 105 rows total.
Knit a further 15 rows even - total 120 rows.
cast off 5 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows, decrease
as for back raglan armhole shaping. Total of 198 rows. COR.
Cast off remaining 10 stitches loosely.
Basic Hood:-
Cast on 150 stitches in waste yarn, if you have only one machine,
cast on 75 and then join with a blind stitch. knit 6 rows waste yarn and
change to main colour.
Work even for 14 rows, this can be the fairisle band as you can turn
it back instead of down, then you would rehang your work so that the proper
side is facing, if not disregard above and just keep knitting. Place lace
holes near the end of row 3 for the ties to go through.
Reset row counter to zero and knit 4 rows. Decrease one stitcha t
eache nd of next row then every following 3rd row for 16 times, until 116
stitches remain. Knit a further 5 rows even - total of 58 rows, excluding
front band. Cast off loosely.
Back Ribbing - Pick up and knit 118 stitches or rehang - knit for a total of
24 rows by machine on keyplate 2 and convert to rib or same number of rows
by hand on cdn needles size 10.
Front Ribbing - Pick up and knit 60 stitches as above.
Sleeve ribbing - pick up and knit 54 stitches as above.
Buttonband - Cast on 8 stitches work in knit one purl one for 30 inches or
when work is slightly stretched it will fit the front of the sweater. I
think it would be real nice to add a cable border here and put the
buttonholes in the middle of the cable. Mark position for 10 buttons or
togggles.
Buttonhole band - Work buttonhole band as for above but working buttonholes
as marked.
Sew on buttons as marked.
Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew back seams of hood. Sew bottom of hood to
neckline, easing to fit. Make a drawstring and insert.
For a drawstring - Measure 4 times the length, tie off one end and put on a
door handle, insert a pencil into the end and twist until it starts to curl
back on itself and let it wind back, knot off the end and insert into the hood.
Try on and enjoy. There are a lot of variables to this pattern. I
hope to knit this one up this weekend. I will post it as soon as it is
done, will do the plain version first. There would be no need to add
buttonboles or a band unless it is desired as you could just leave it as a
cabled border, and also add cables to the bottom and the hood as well as the
sleeve ends.
